Tiny trees for a toy train display

Christmas closeouts provide a bounty of cost-effective conifers

While intended for holiday displays, trees like these mini Canadian pines offer layout builders an inexpensive alternative to filling large spaces with ready-made trees specifically packaged for hobbyists.
Having assembled several toy train layouts featuring extensively forested areas, I know just how costly it can be to purchase commercial, scale-size trees. Yes, the variety and quality of today’s ready-to-use model trees is exceptional. However, populating even a 24-square-inch area with these trees can easily equal the expense of an entry-level locomotive!

I couldn’t help but think there was a more cost-effective way to fill a vast space. The perfect solution arrived when I visited a yard and garden store last winter.

As my wife and I shopped for a new artificial Christmas tree at post-season discount prices, I happened upon a 12-inch-tall miniature conifer intended
for a tabletop holiday display. Having just purchased a 16-inch-tall O scale tree for my home layout, I immediately recognized the toy train applications for this overlooked product.

Things got even better when I checked the discounted sticker price – less than the cost of a fast-food beverage! In a heartbeat, I spared each and every tree from a one-way trip to the Island of Misfit Toys.

In addition to finding trees like this after the holidays, I’ve seen similar conifers sold throughout the year at big crafts stores, albeit at three times the price
I paid. Even then, be sure to use store coupons to make the purchase more economical!
