The aptly named Old Weathered Barn (no. BR5865) is the newest addition to Woodland Scenics Built-&-Ready line of highly detailed, fully assembled O gauge buildings.

From the stone foundation to the weathered shake shingles on its gambrel roof, this model is an excellent representation of a classic prairie- or Western-style barn, common on farms throughout the Midwest and West from the late 19th century through today.

Opening the box
The model measures 10 1/4 x 7 13/16 inches and is 7 7/8 inches high. The front features a peaked roof overhang over the hayloft doors, complete with rope ready to lift haybales into the loft. The roof includes a cupola with ventilation slats on the sides and a weathervane on top.

The board walls are painted a faded red oxide. A closer look reveals plenty of attention to detail. Some of the boards are slightly warped, and a few of the panes on the windows are cracked.

There is large (non-opening) sliding door at ground level under the hayloft and a similar door at the rear. In an actual barn these will provide access to a wide central aisle with animal stalls on either side.

Often barns are catchall structures, used to shelter draft horses and dairy cattle, provide storage space for agricultural implements, and offer a place to stockpile animal feed. This model nicely captures the look of these Midwestern multi-taskers with a concrete grain silo, an open-ended implement shed, a farm office, and a printed interior illuminated by a pre-installed pair of warm white LEDs. The lights are connected to an internal circuit board, accessed from under the building. The building is compatible with Woodland Scenics extensive range of Just Plug System wiring components.

Barns like this are iconic structures across rural America, and Woodland Scenics hits all the key detail points in a relatively compact building. Take it from a former farm boy, the only element missing from this model is the smell of livestock – and I’m not complaining!
